Biography

Director (Italy) Italian actor and filmmaker, born in Milan, 1948. In 1975 he graduated from university with a degree in architecture and worked as an actor in the Milan's Piccolo Teatro. He went on to co-direct animation films with Bruno Bozzetto for whom he also wrote and acted in Allegro Non Troppo in 1976. In 1979 he wrote, directed and cast himself in Ratataplan, his first feature film which was screened as part of the official selection at the Venice Film Festival. The film received world-wide distribution and he went on to direct Ho fatto splash (1980) and Domani si balla (1982). From 1983 to 1987 he worked for Italian television and was cast as Bertoldino in Mario Monicelli's film Bertoldo, Bertoldino e Cacasenno. In 1989 he once again wrote, directed and cast himself in a film conceived entirely by himself, called Ladri di Saponette (The Soap Thief) which went on to win the First Prize at the Moscow Film Festival. Volere Volare (I Want to Fly, 1990) won him another award at the Montreal Film Festival. He then directed and acted in Stefano Quantestorie (1993) for which he also wrote the screenplay. After a pause, during which he worked only as an actor in Jean-Charles Tacchella's film, Tous les jours dimanche (1994) and as director on Palla di neve (1995), he once again picked up the reins of scriptwriter, actor and director for Luna e l'Altra (1997).
